Options in The Field of Medical Education Apart from MBBS & BDS

After passing of 12th Examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as subjects, students and their parents think that MBBS and BDS are the only options ahead for career prospects in the field of medicine. But all students cannot get through the entrance exams because of limited number of seats available in the courses. This article, tried to list other options available with the students for having a bright future.
BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery)
Ayurveda is one of the ancient medical systems of the world. It traces its roots  to the Vedic period.The Ayurvedic system of medical care is based on the concept where the natural healing capacity of the body is being enhanced by Ayurvedic therapy. Ayurvedic treatment includes reducing symptoms, eliminating impurities, reducing worry, increasing resistance of disease and increasing harmony of patient's life.
The course aims at providing basic education in Ayurveda leading to the degree of B.A.M.S. It aims at preparing graduates of Ayurveda having basic and fundamental knowledge in different subjects of Ayurveda with extensive practical training. A student can become an efficient teacher, a research scholar and a competent Ayurvedic physician (Kayachikitsaka) and surgeon (Shalyachikitsaka) to be able to contribute in the medical and health services of the country. BAMS course in India is governed by Central Council of Indian Medicine, a statutory body under IMCC Act 1970, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.
The course duration is of  5½ years, out of which 4½ year are academic session and there is 1 year of mandatory internship.

The Unani medicine system is one of the ancient medication system adopted by the South-Asia and Middle-East countries of the world. It is also known as the "Hikmat" or Unani Tibb Medicine. It has a history spanning 6000 years. Unani is the fourth most popular medication system in India after the Allopathic, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic system. BUMS course is also known as Kamil-E-Tibb-O-Jarahat. BUMS course in India is governed by Central Council Of Indian Medicine, a statutory body under IMCC Act 1970, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.
There is an undergraduate degree programme in the field of Unani medicine and surgery. This degree covers knowledge of the Unani system. The  degree is quite enough to become a doctor (Hakim) in the Unani medical field. Unani is the system of alternative medicines. The patients are taken care of by enhancing the natural healing power of the human body. The concept of Unani is that the body rejuvenates itself because of its self-healing powers. We just need to help it by enhancing the natural healing power.

Nurses work with old and young adults with diverse health conditions, both chronic and acute, within both hospital and community settings. B V Sc. & A H (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry)
This discipline focuses on the use of biology and technology to treat and prevent diseases occurring in animals. The Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & AH) degree falls within the Veterinary Education part of Medical Education in India and is therefore monitored by the Veterinary Council of India. The programme focuses primarily on veterinary anatomy, veterinary physiology and biochemistry, and livestock production and management.

This discipline uses massages, exercises and movement of muscles to treat patients who have suffered injuries from accidents or are recovering from surgeries. The speech and hearing profession is relatively younger science, but it has taken great strides with advancement in information technology into a high-tech medico rehabilitation discipline. The speech and hearing specialist, commonly referred to as Audiologist and Speech Pathologist, provides services to the sufferers of hearing disorders and speech defects like stammering, stuttering, voice disorder, delayed speech and language development disorders due to mental retardation, deafness, cerebral dysfunction, autism spectrum disorders etc. The speech and hearing professionals are absorbed into various types of roles depending on the organizational setup. While in a hospital, it is the role of a Clinical Audiologist dealing with identification, assessment & diagnosis of hearing impairment and therapy for speech defects, in the industries they deal with occupational health hazards. In the institutes for the Handicapped, they work as the rehabilitator, while in special schools for the handicapped the role revolves around Educational Audiology.
