Tech Meets Travel: Emerging Careers in Tourism Ranjana Kumari India's tourism sector is a kaleidoscope of culture, heritage, and natural and modern marvels, drawing travelers from every corner of the globe. India offers a vibrant mix of experiences-be it the serene villages, tranquil mountains, bustling markets, alluring luxury cruises, or the burgeoning niche of medical value tourism. The nation's diverse topography, rich history, and affordable yet world- class hospitality and healthcare have made it a sought-after for both leisure and purpose-driven travelers. The Government of India has launched a range of impactful initiatives to promote tourism and skill development, fostering sustainable and inclusive growth in the sector. The Swadesh Darshan Scheme and PRASHAD Scheme focus on developing theme-based tourist circuits and rejuvenating pilgrimage sites, respectively, to promote cultural, heritage, and spiritual tourism. The Incredible India Tourist Facilitator (IITF) Certification Programme and Capacity Building for Service Providers (CBSP) Scheme aim to enhance skills and employment opportunities through training and certification, while the ‘Hunar Se Rozgar Tak’ (HSRT) programme provides short-term hospitality training to youth. Adopt a Heritage: ‘Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan’ encourages private and public investment in developing heritage site amenities. The ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ Initiative promotes domestic tourism, and the RCS-UDAN Scheme enhances regional air connectivity, making travel more accessible. Together, these initiatives drive infrastructure development, skill enhancement, and sustainable tourism across India. A Catalyst for Employment India's tourism sector witnessed remarkable progress in 2024, with a strong focus on employment generation and skill development. Key highlights include: • International Tourist Arrivals (ITAs): 18.89 Million (2023). • Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs): Rs. 231,927 Crore (2023). • Domestic Tourist Visits (DTVs): 2,509 Million (2023). India's tourism sector's potential for employment generation is immense. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, India's tourism industry could support over 100 million jobs by 2030, fueled by both direct and indirect opportunities. From traditional roles in hospitality and transportation to emerging opportunities in wellness tourism, eco-tourism, and digital tourism marketing, the sector is a cornerstone of India's job creation strategy. Rural tourism alone is poised to empower countless artisans and entrepreneurs, while the inland cruise tourism industry is set to create specialised roles in logistics, hospitality, and maritime operations. Meanwhile, medical value tourism is fostering employment in healthcare, translation services, and patient care management. Tech Savvy Tourism Careers Technology is revolutionising the tourism sector, transforming it into a dynamic hub of innovation that reshapes how destinations are discovered, experienced, and managed.
